Coordinating Aesthetic Couple’s Workout Outfits

Paul and I love coordinating aesthetic couples workout outfits! Have you noticed latest trends in recent years that go beyond just working out and wearing gym clothes out of necessity—it’s all about looking good while working out. And a lot of the time, we wear workout clothes even if the gym is not our ultimate destination! What better way to do this than styling activewear with your significant other? That is if you’re that kind of couple. Lord knows we are! :) Whether you love styling workout clothes as a couple like we do, or just looking for some activewear inspo, you’re at the right place! Paul and I hit the gym multiple times a week, go for a run weekly, and even do a yoga class. We don’t always coordinate workout outfits, but it adds a bit of fun element to our fitness routine, as cheesy as it may sound!

Here’s everything you need to know about couples styling workout clothes and how to make it work for you.

Why Couple’s Style Workout Clothing?

Boosts Motivation

Working out with a partner is a great way to stay motivated. Paul and I have found that even when we jog together, the steady conversation makes the time go by so fast and gives us the ability to jog longer distances. Okay, okay… I (Falon) can jog longer distances, but I am pretty sure Paul can run much faster and endure much longer distances more easily. But who is keeping track (pun not intended)? We can’t help but like feeling cutesy– I guess we are THAT cheesy, so coordinating activewear is a no-brainer. A couple’s complementary outfit is the perfect choice for creating a sense of teamwork too!

Shows Unity and Support

The more you follow us, the more you will realize we try to stay in step with each other’s outfits. We don’t go twinsie or anything (usually), but we like to compliment each other when we are doing shared activities. Why? Well, imagine you are getting ready for a date. And your husband gets ready and waits downstairs wearing comfortable clothes, like a pair of jeans and a graphic tee. You are upstairs getting ready and put on a dress, heels, and with an updo. Wouldn’t you feel a little overdressed, or worse, feel a little disappointed that your husband is dressed under? It really has simply become a habit for us. We used to ask, “what are you going to wear?,” but now it’s almost automatic. We just know. We are husband and wife, and best friends, so coordinating outfits (even if it’s simply coordinating on a level of niceness), it shoes unity and partnership. The same goes for working out together. It’s a fun way to show off your bond and support for each other’s fitness journeys.

Enhances Your Workout Experience

Comfortable and aesthetic clothes significantly improves our exercise experience, and it can for you too. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, you’re more likely to perform better. This goes for lots of other activities, not just working out. Workout outfits that are functional, breathable, and stylish make it easier to focus on your exercises rather than adjusting uncomfortable clothing.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Couple’s Workout Outfits

Prioritize Comfort and Functionality

The foundation of any good workout outfit is comfort. Look for fabrics that are breathable, moisture-wicking, and flexible. These materials help regulate your body temperature and keep you dryer, even during intense workouts.

Key Fabrics:

  • Polyester or blends: Lightweight, durable, and moisture-wicking.
  • Nylon: Soft, stretchy, and resistant to abrasion.
  • Moisture Wicking Cotton: Pulls sweat away from the skin to evaporate
  • Spandex or Lycra: Offers excellent elasticity and freedom of movement.

Find a Style That Suits Both of You

Whether it’s bold patterns, minimalist designs, or vibrant colors, there’s a wide range of options available, and it’s important that both partners feel comfortable and confident in their outfits. If not, why even coordinate with each other? We love solids, but occasionally we will pull out the good ol’ tried and true patterns! I (Falon) am usually the one rocking them, but Paul tends to coordinate with them if we feel up to it!

Match Without Being Identical

As mentioned above, you don’t have to wear the exact same colors or match the entire outfit (if that’s even possible ha ha) to coordinate. Complementary colors or matching elements like similar patterns or designs can be just as effective. For example, Paul might wear a solid color top while I wear that same color in my shorts, yoga pants, or crop top. These are just minimal things you can do to feel united during a workout together. When we run miles together, trust me, there is something motivating about this. Just us? No?

Consider the Type of Workout

This really goes without saying, but different workouts require different types of gear. Make sure your outfits are suited to the activities you’ll be doing. For example, yoga requires more flexible and stretchy clothing, while running needs more support and breathability. This may be a little challenging for the male. Paul likes to do hot yoga with me, but a lot of men’s athletic clothes are geared more toward running or the gym. Finding the right outfit for him to wear while doing hot yoga is sometimes not as easy as you’d think. He wants to be comfortable stretching, but also something that doesn’t soak while sweating a ton! Hot yoga is next level difficult and intense, and not for the faint of heart! But it’s one of our favorite ways to burn those calories!

Styling Ideas for Couple’s Workout Outfits

Matching Tops and Bottoms

The simplest way to coordinate is by wearing matching or coordinating tops and bottoms. This could be identical colored tops paired with similar shorts or leggings. This is a bit more matchy, matchy, but it works. Opt for colors that you both love, or go for classic black and white combinations for a sleek look. I know when Paul and I have modeled for some activewear clothing brands, we really loved the black and white look!

Color Coordination

Choose a color palette that works for both of you. For instance, if you both love blue, you can pick different shades of blue for your outfits. This creates a cohesive look without being overly matchy-matchy, which really is the goal here. Again, not TOO cheesy, but a little cheese never hurt anyone.

Pattern Play

If you’re feeling bold, experiment with patterns. One partner could wear a patterned top while the other wears a solid color that matches one of the colors in the pattern. This approach adds visual interest without being overwhelming. And, you don’t have to look too hard to find some patterns for men anymore! Lululemon sells some nice pattern shorts for men here or Vuori here. It is becoming increasingly popular.

Accessory Sync

This is just for fun! Accessories like headbands, wristbands, and sneakers can also be coordinated. Matching or complementary accessories can pull your whole look together, even if your main outfits aren’t identical. This is really getting into the (k)nitty gritty of things though. Too much?

Practical Considerations

Seasonal Changes

Ensure your workout wardrobe is versatile enough to handle different seasons. Paul and I like to invest in layers like lightweight jackets for cooler weather and breathable tops for the summer months. Having a range of options ensures you can stay stylish and comfortable year-round. It’s a bit easier for women to layer than for men, however. Think sports bras, tanks, bombers, hoodies, etc. Layers also give more opportunity for coordinating colors! Do we hear your hands clapping? Or are we the only ones excited about this?

Budget-Friendly Options

Styling workout clothes as a couple doesn’t have to break the bank. Many of the brands mentioned above offer affordable options that don’t compromise on style or functionality. Look out for sales, discounts, and outlet stores to find good deals on high-quality workout gear. We love shopping the outlets! You can easily find the exact same piece there that you find in higher end stores like Macy’s, Nordstroms, etc.

Caring for Your Workout Clothes

Proper care extends the life of your workout clothes. Honestly, this could be an entirely different blog post (let us know if you want us to write that one up because we have lots of advice on this!). For basics though… just wash them in cold water, avoid fabric softeners, and air dry them!!! Air dry is key! This will help maintain the integrity of the fabrics and ensures your coordinated outfits stay looking fresh and new for longer so you have an abundance of opportunity to match with your significant other. Yay! *inserting eye roll emoji here*

Listen, we know we may be in the lesser percentile for couples who like to coordinate even their workout outfits, but we are loud and proud about it! :)

Conclusion:

Remember, this isn’t about being cheesy, or too matchy-matchy… well, maybe sometimes. :) This is about having fun with your significant other and coordinating to boost endurance. There is just something about being coordinated while working out together that boosts energy, partnership, and adrenaline! Just try it! Let us know if you do and if it helped boost your workout together!
